• The STAN SMITH was born in 1965 as the signature model of French tennis player Robert Haillet and was the world's first leather tennis shoe — until then, textile had dominated the courts. In 1971 Stan Smith won the US Open in it, and since 1978 the model has officially carried only his name; during the transition period the tongue bore both Smith's portrait and the Haillet inscription. Instead of stitched-on stripes there are small holes perforated directly in the leather — which is why the silhouette is so clean and breathes at the same time. It is one of the best-selling adidas models of all time.
